It all started with a shared passion for pets. As dedicated puppy raisers for South African Guide Dogs, we found ourselves immersed in the world of pet care, always on the lookout for the best products to pamper our pups. Raising these remarkable guide dogs not only deepened our love for animals but also sparked the idea of creating something meaningful—an online store where quality, care, and community come together.
The decision to start PolkaDot Pet Products wasn’t an overnight one. It took months of brainstorming, planning, and countless cups of coffee to define what we wanted our brand to stand for. We knew we didn’t want to be just another pet shop. Instead, we wanted to create a space where pet lovers like us could find products that were not only high quality but also had a story behind them—products that would bring joy to both pets and their humans.
Choosing the name “PolkaDot Pet Products” felt like a perfect fit—quirky, playful, and memorable. From there, the real work began: selecting the right products, designing our brand, and building our website. We poured our hearts into curating a range of items that included cozy blankets named after the guide dogs we’ve raised, natural treats, stylish accessories for pet parents, and much more. Each product has been carefully selected with love and intention.
Of course, starting a business isn’t without its hurdles. From navigating supplier negotiations to setting up our online store, each step presented a unique challenge. But with every obstacle, we learned and grew, always keeping our mission in sight: to create a community of pet lovers who value quality, care, and connection.
The most rewarding part of this journey has been the moments of joy and excitement we’ve experienced along the way—seeing our ideas come to life, receiving samples of our first products, and getting positive feedback from friends, family, and the pet community. Knowing that we’re building something that will bring happiness to pets and their people keeps us going every day.
